The Federal Government has directed all secondary schools to ensure their teachers are certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) by 2027, or they will lose accreditation as examination centres for public exams, aiming to elevate professionalism in education.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa issued the directive in a Thursday memo to the TRCN Registrar, stating that, effective March 2027 for WASSCE, May 2027 for NABTEB, June 2027 for NECO, and June 2027 for SAISSCE, schools with unlicensed teachers will be disqualified as exam centres. Schools must achieve 75% compliance by 2026 and 100% by 2027. Alausa urged state governments to enforce compliance in both public and private institutions within two years to avoid disruptions.
To facilitate certification, Alausa encouraged non-education graduates with at least 12 months of classroom experience to enroll in the National Teachers Institute’s (NTI) abridged professional courses, lasting three to six months, to qualify for TRCN registration. He emphasized widespread stakeholder sensitization to ensure smooth implementation.
In a related development, Delta State reported re-enrolling 2,000 out-of-school children in 2025 through targeted outreach, as announced by Samuel Mariere, Executive Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (D-SUBEB).
Speaking in Asaba, Mariere noted that 507,050 learners—62% of the enrolled population—benefited from classrooms, materials, and welfare facilities. Initiatives included training 5,511 teachers, supplying Braille and mobility aids for special needs students, and deploying 167,707 textbooks, 1,843 tablets, and 64 interactive boards, particularly in rural and riverine areas.
Infrastructure upgrades included 491 repaired classrooms, 164 VIP toilets, and five solar-powered boreholes.
